Hospital use

The atlas provides crude rates of hospital discharges for selected surgeries and by type of hospitalisation (ambulatory sensory, elective, acute). Data is displayed as a crude rate and by ethnicity and gender. Due to the low number of hospital discharges for some conditions in the smaller DHB’s rates can vary widely from year to year.

Crude rates (CR) represent the proportion of people in a population who have been diagnosed with the specified condition each year. It illustrates the actual burden of disease within a population and can be used to compare groups with the same age distribution.

District Health Boards

District health boards (DHBs) are responsible for providing or funding the provision of health services in their district. There are currently 20 DHB's in New Zealand.
